Approach
I am a Registered Social Worker with 35 years of experience supporting children, youth, adults, and older adults through many of life’s challenges. I earned my Bachelor of Social Work from the Université de Moncton in 1991 and have been a registered social worker since that time. Since 2004, I have worked within Addiction and Mental Health Services, and in 2019, I opened Debbie Comeau Counselling Services to provide compassionate and personalized counselling within my community.
Throughout my career, my areas of expertise have included grief, anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction and substance use, stress, life transitions, emotional regulation, self-esteem, body image, codependency, caregiving, and relationship and family concerns.
I also have experience supporting individuals who have been impacted by victimization, violence, abuse, or other traumatic circumstances. I offer a compassionate space where they can process their experiences, rebuild a sense of safety and personal control, and move forward at a pace that feels right for them.
I recognize that every person’s experiences are different. The counselling process is therefore adapted to each client’s individual needs, strengths, preferences, goals, and personal pace.
My approach is holistic, trauma-informed, and grounded in a biopsychosocial perspective. This means looking at the whole person and recognizing how emotional well-being may be influenced by life experiences, relationships, physical health, environment, culture, identity, and personal beliefs. I draw from evidence-informed approaches that include cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, attachment-based practices, narrative therapy, compassion-focused approaches, and strengths-based counselling.
I provide services to children. I use developmentally appropriate, play-based activities that allow them to communicate, explore feelings, develop coping skills, and express themselves in ways that feel natural for their age. This may include play, creative activities, stories, and other age-appropriate approaches, along with conversation and caregiver involvement when appropriate.
I have completed First Nations cultural competency training and value perspectives that honour cultural knowledge, identity, and holistic well-being. I strive to provide a welcoming, respectful, and non-judgmental environment where clients feel heard, understood, and supported. Professional counselling services may be covered for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients through the Non-Insured Health Benefits program (NIHB).
Complementary Mind–Body–Spirit Practices
Depending on each client’s interests, beliefs, and comfort level, I may incorporate Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT or tapping), grounding exercises, meditation, and mindfulness into the counselling process.
For clients drawn to a holistic mind–body–spirit approach, I also offer optional complementary energy-based wellness practices. These gentle practices can provide an opportunity to slow down, step away from the busyness of everyday life, become more aware of the body and inner experience, and create space for relaxation, quiet reflection, and a renewed sense of calm, clarity, and personal connection.
Participation in complementary energy-based practices is always voluntary and client-led. These services are clearly distinguished from and offered separately from my regulated social-work counselling services. They are not eligible for, included in, or billed under NIHB or private insurance coverage. They are not intended to diagnose or treat a mental-health or medical condition or to replace appropriate professional care.
I provide individual counselling to children aged four and older, preteens, teenagers, adults, and elders. Services are available in both English and French and may be provided in person in Miramichi, New Brunswick, online by video, or by telephone.
I am currently accepting new clients and offer a complimentary 15-minute introductory call to help you determine whether my approach and services feel like the right fit for you.
